Why Our Food Is Different
Turkle's Nest Farm was started in 2006. We began raising sheep with the goal of bringing quality back to the American sheep industry. From there, the idea spread. We wanted to bring quality back to all segments of food in America. While the industry operates with the goal of meeting minimum standards and doing no harm, we strive to exceed expectations and improve the lives of our animals, customers, and neighbors.
For the ducks, this means room to waddle and puddles to splash in
For the chickens, this means the chance to scratch in the dirt and find a few bugs.
Today, Turkle's Nest Farm is home to an award winning sheep flock, a cattle project, a flock of laying hens, and more! Although the farm has grown over the years we are continuously working to push quality to new heights, explore new ideas, and develop new methodology.
There are many reasons. We could talk about the different cholesterol content of our eggs. We could talk about how our lamb doesn't have a "strong" taste. But to sum it all up in one simple statement: We think nature is pretty well-made.
We believe that chickens and sheep and cows are different. Because we acknowledge the differences of animals, we believe they deserve to live the life they were designed for. Animals that live as they should are happier, healthier, and help us to become healthier and happier too. That's what we think, anyway.
In the United States, only 2% of the population lives on farms. The gap between people and their food is widening. We think that's a problem. Our goal at Turkle's Nest Farm is to bring people and their food back together. In other words to put the "culture" back in "agriculture".
Our Story
For the sheep, this means having some leafy plants for them to graze on.
The land that serves as the home of Turkle's Nest Farm was left to us so that we could maintain and care for it. We take that mission very seriously. No matter how much Turkle's Nest Farm grows, you can be assured that we will remain good stewards of the land, the animals, the plants, our family, our customers, and the community.
