Laying Hens
Sheep
We enjoy working with the British breeds, specifically the Suffolk, Hampshire, and Dorset. These breeds were developed to thrive in the humid, foggy hills of Britain centuries ago. The relatively similar terrain and wet weather makes these breeds well suited to eastern Virginia.
The sheep are at the center of the farm's management. They rotate through the pastures, grazing down the grass, clover, and other plants. This arrangement is mutually beneficial. The pastures benefit by being kept trimmed and fertilized. The sheep benefit by having food, fresh air, and room to run about.
Turkle's Nest Farm lamb has developed a loyal following that we are very grateful for. We try to exceed expectations and raise the bar each year with better and better products.
Turkle's Nest Farm Lamb is:
We believe that by providing a superior life for the animal, you are able to produce a superior product - a better egg.
These sheep are raised on pasture with the tandem goals of producing healthy animals and a quality product.
Chickens are massively important to the farm. They help us keep the farm clean. Some chickens roam the pastures eating bugs, worms, and other creepy crawlies that they can find. Other chickens scratch and dig in compost piles hunting for bugs or other morsels. Their scratching and digging helps mix the compost, which enables it to break down faster. This arrangement helps control the bug population and allows the chickens to run around in the sun and fresh air....just like birds do in the wild.
